Maceo Parker - Life On Planet Groove
Artist: Maceo Parker
Album: Life on Planet Groove
Year: 1992
Label: Verve
Style: jazz, funk
Format:mp3@320Kbps
Size: 172 Mb (covers)
Total time: 74:10

Maceo Parker: his name is synonymous with Funky Music. It is almost impossible to separate which came first, Maceo or the funk. The amazing P-funk Parker has been at it with his legendary alto horn for some time dating back to the 1960s. Hes the living, breathing pulse which connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher which unravels dance music down to its core.

Herbie Mann - Plays The Roar of the Greasepaint
Artist: Herbie Mann
Album: Plays The Roar of the Greasepaint -
The Smell of the Crowd

Year: 1965
Total time: 28:33
Format: FLAC + mp3@320Kbps
Size: 203 & 64 Mb (scans)

Flutist Herbie Mann on this out-of-print LP performs 11 songs from a famous Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley musical. Joined by an orchestra arranged by Ray Ellis (and including either Chick Corea or Roger Kellaway on piano), Mann plays well enough. However, the only one of the 11 songs remembered today is "Who Can I Turn To," and the renditions of the material are so brief (only two songs are longer than three minutes) as to be unadventurous and rather superficial. One of Mann's less significant projects of the 1960s. - AMG

Herbie Mann - Today!
Artist: Herbie Mann
Album: Today!
Year: 1967 (Recorded in Nov. 1965)
Total time: 33:27
Format: FLAC + MP3@320 Kbps
Size: 257 & 75 Mb (scans)

Flutist Herbie Mann has always had wide interests in music. For this hard-to-find LP he is joined by three brass, vibraphonist Dave Pike, bassist Earl May, drummer Bruno Carr and percussionist Patato Valdes (with arrangements by Oliver Nelson) for a wide-ranging program that includes two Beatles songs, a selection from Burt Bacharach and two ancient pieces by Duke Ellington ("Creole Love Call" and "The Mooche"). In general Mann plays quite well but there is little memorable about this generally commercial effort. - AMG

At first glance, it would seem like an impossible task to summarize Miles Davis' career into a succinct double-disc set. All of the music contained here is outstanding. ESSENTIAL will benefit listeners who just don't have the time to investigate Davis' career in detail, yet who want to touch bases on every stage of his eclectic career.

1982: Dave Brubeck Quartet - Concord On a Summer Night
Artist: Dave Brubeck
Album: Concord On a Summer Night
Label: Concord Jazz
Year: 1982
Quality: MP3/320
Size: 76.8 MB (sharebee)
Time: 37:50

In 1982 pianist Dave Brubeck welcomed clarinetist Bill Smith (who he had played with back in his octet days in the late '40s) as a permanent member of his Quartet along with drummer Randy Jones and Chris Brubeck on electric bass and occasional bass trombone. This album features the new Quartet at the Concord Jazz Festival playing what would become their typical mixture of songs: three Brubeck compositions ("Benjamin," "Koto Song" and "Softly, William, Softly"), a standard ("Black and Blue") and yet another remake of "Take Five." These are fine performances. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
