His passion for this music is lifelong, and one can hear in his delivery as a singer the influences of everyone from Louis Armstrong to Jack Teagarden, though he is way more raggedy and doesn't have his phrasing down at all. But again, that's just fine for what this is!
Healey's not aiming to please; he's enjoying himself and that's obvious here!

Kenny Barron - Things Unseen
Artist: Kenny Barron
Album: Things Unseen
Year: 1997
Format: mp3@320Kbps
Size: 80+93 Mb (with covers)
Total time: 73:24

Things Unseen is a lovely set of swinging jazz, finding pianist Kenny Barron supported by a stellar combo of saxophonist John Stubblefield, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, guitarist John Scofield, bassist David Williams, drummer Victor Lewis, violinist Naoko Terai and percussionist Mino Cinelu. Barron's playing, alternately graceful and kinetic, confirms his status as one of the finest pianists of the '90s, and Things Unseen is another welcome addition to his canon. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a contemporary swing band from southern California.
This groups modern take on retro swing music comes off like the cross between a traditional jazz band (due to its inclusion of horns, in addition to standard guitar, bass and drums) and a more common rock/pop group. Unlike jazz band shows, however, nobodys sitting down behind music stands here. Instead, soloists trot up to the front of the stage whenever they do their thing -- just like rockers such as Jimmy Page do it -- and soak in the spotlight

REPOST with new links from Archibald Haddock towards Charlie's Birtday!

Featuring two of Charles Mingus's last major works, the 1978 Cumbia & Jazz Fusion is typically ambitious and exciting. The 28-minute title track merges a winning theme played on reeds and Latin percussion, full-on big-band passages, and a burlesque of "Shortnin' Bread" that climaxes in cries of "Freedom! Freedom!" One of a kind, to be sure. "Todo Modo" covers nearly as much ground, moving between a gloomy theme and inspired upbeat passages with grand sax solos by George Adams. This CD edition adds two short takes of Mingus's solo piano on a medley of "The Wedding March" and his own "Slow Waltz." The maestro was to make only two more albums, but his physical decline is belied by the music's power. -- Rickey Wright

Lennie Niehaus, Vol. 2 - Zounds! (1997)
Artist: Lennie Niehaus
Album: Zounds!
Year: 1997
Genre: Jazz
Label: Contemporary/OJC
Format: MP3 320 Kbps
Size: 91 MB
Time: 41:15

This formerly rare Contemporary set was reissued on a 1997 OJC CD. Lennie Niehaus, best known for his scores for Clint Eastwood films in the 1980s and '90s, was an excellent cool-toned bop altoist back in the '50s who spent time working with Stan Kenton. For this album, he is heard on two different occasions providing arrangements and alto solos for octets. With such fine players as either Jack Montrose or Bill Perkins on tenor, Bob Gordon or Pepper Adams on baritone, and other top West Coast jazz musicians, Niehaus primarily performs cool jazz. The inventive charts (which on the later date utilize a French horn and a tuba) and the superior, concise solos make this a set well worth acquiring by fans of the West Coast jazz sound of the '50s.

By no means a lost classic, The Real George Kirby is an enjoyable mix of jazz standards, Broadway showtunes, and general obscurities. Vocally, Sinatra comes to mind, but that's not to say Kirby doesn't have his own style. Anyone interested in vocal jazz should give this a listen!

Marshall Bowden, Jazztitude

The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions represents a stunning crossroads where boxing, the Black Power movement, the development of rock music as an expression of vast changes in American society, the electronic amplification of jazz, and Miles Davis all came together. That the music heard on this newly-released 5 CD set was boiled down to a mere hour's worth of a soundtrack album, with snippets turning up on Live-Evil and Get Up With It, is amazing. Listening to the music here, most of which has never been released previously, is like finding out something new about someone you thought you knew well.

Review by Al Campbell:
Wheel of Fortune features 28 songs by pop vocalist Kay Starr originally recorded for Capitol between 1944 and 1952. While this compilation isn't a complete summary of the singer's career, it does include the hits "You Were Only Foolin'," "Come On-A My House," "Hoop-Dee-Doo," "I'll Never Be Free" and her number one chart topper from 1952 "Wheel of Fortune."

On February 12, 1964, Miles Davis took his band to perform at New York's Philharmonic Hall, recording the show for release. Not one but two albums were yielded from this recording, "Four and More" and "My Funny Valentine". By this point, this group was a well honed unit, and their work together on these two albums is fantastic!
