Herbie Mann - Impressions of The Middle East (1967)Artist: Herbie Mann
Album: Impressions Of The Middle East
Year: 1967
Label: Atlantic
Style: Jazz, Oriental
Format: mp3@320 Kbps
Size: 104 Mb
Total time: 44:25

This album marks one of the rare occasions when a major jazz musicians has turned his attention to the musical traditions of the Middle East. Herbie Mann has recorded the ”pleasant sound” whisch is in the grain of the whole region. Exuberance is Manns mood. He blows his flute to lifting rhythms, capturing the joys and the flamboyance of the Middle Eastern soul.
Turkish Coffee, a Mann original, displays how wonderfully suitable is jazz for evocation of exotic themes. The performance has the makings of an authentic fasil,a suite or fugue with an intriguing interplay between the ensemble and occasional instrumental solos and cadenzas. >> More >>

Blue Note's The Return of Art Pepper: The Complete Art Pepper Aladdin Recordings compiles the 15 final masters that the alto saxophonist recorded for Aladdin between August 1956 and January 1957. These are titled The Return of Art Pepper, since they were recorded shortly after he completed a jail sentence in 1956. As a result, Pepper's chops are a little rusty, but you can hear that he still has a passion for playing, and he does improve over the course of these tracks. For serious Pepper fans, it's worth a listen, but for less dedicated fans, there are better places to become acquainted with his work. -- AMG

This album, recorded in 1956 and 1957, is the second part of a three-volume set released by Aladdin Records, comprising the saxophonist's full body of recorded material for this label. Combining bebop with West Coast cool, MODERN ART documents memorable performances of standards, including the luscious ballad "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," and the steamy "Summertime." Pepper's version of this latter track is replete with a thick, almost haunting, reverb effect. Other standouts are the stripped-down versions of "Blues In" and "Blue Out," two tunes that feature Pepper's lamenting sax as it soliloquizes over a simple walking bass line.

The third of three volumes chronicling Pepper's complete Aladdin recordings, Blue Note's Art of Pepper, Vol. 3 finds the West Coast alto saxophonist in top form over the course of 12 stunning cuts. Recorded in 1957, the set takes in both Pepper originals ("Holiday Flight," "Surf Ride") and choice standards ("Long Ago and Faraway," "Without a Song"). There's also a fine cover of the rare Bud Powell cut "Webb City." Topped off with excellent work by pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Chuck Flores, this collection is a must-have for all Pepper fans. -- AMG

Album: More for Les - At the Village Vanguard, Vol. 4
Year: 1977
Label: Contemporary/OJC
Time: 55:29
Format: MP3 @320 kbps
Size: 133 mb (RS.com, with 5% file recovery)
AMG Rating: Art Pepper - More for Les - At the Village Vanguard, Vol. 4 (1977)

The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. -- AMG
