     This is one of Marcus Roberts' finest all-around recordings. The set of solo piano improvisations features Roberts performing many older tunes (including "Maple Leaf Rag" and four James P. Johnson tunes) plus some of his originals, showing off his stride technique. Roberts' right hand borders on the miraculous, while his left often breaks up rhythms, jumping one beat ahead or behind purposely for short stretches and adding tension to the performance.      Despite the title, this disc--simultaneously released with Distractions, a CD by his neo-soul group, RH Factor--is trumpeter Roy Hargrove's first acoustic jazz recording since 2000 release, Moment to Moment. The leader's full-bodied, bravura tones are as bright and bold as ever, edging more into the stylistic atmosphere once occupied by the former trumpet god, Freddie Hubbard. Hargrove is backed by a quintet featuring ex-Jazz Messenger, pianist Ronnie Matthews, bassist Dwayne Burno, drummer Willie Jones IIII, and alto saxophonist/flutist Justin Robinson. They pull no punches on these no-nonsense tunes, like the Latin-tinged title track, and the John Coltrane/Ornette Coleman-coded "Camaraderie." Special guest Slide Hampton makes his elegant trombone presence felt on his soaring tune, "A Day in Vienna," on the waltzy "Salima's Dance," and the standard, "Invitation."      Blue Mitchell was a powerful yet lyrical trumpet player with a crystal-clear, bell-like tone. This album, Mitchell's first, recorded in 1958, is an excellent one, and features a top-notch group of New York hard-boppers behind him. One very special thing about the CD is that it contains the first recording of Benny Golson's masterful BLUES MARCH, done 3 months before the famous (and definitive) Art Blakey recording of it with Golson present. This lengthy version (10+ minutes) is taken a bit slower and features impressive Johnny Griffin on tenor sax, who takes a very emotional solo. Also good is BROTHER 'BALL, dedicated to Cannonball Adderley, which has a very attractive theme and excellent Mitchell. So too is the blues piece SIR JOHN, which is a-b-c formatted, and has a terrific Griffin tenor solo. Curtis Fuller is also present on trombone, and the rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones is as solid as could be. This was an auspicious debut album for Blue and one that will give listening pleasure to all hard-bop fans. -- Amazon.com reviewer
