      This collection from the late 1950s finds the guitarist in an upbeat jam session with Art Blakey, Junior Cook, Bobby Timmons, and others. A great set that falls somewhere between uptown hard bop and chicken shack blues, though the couple of romantic ballads are more in keeping with the mood of the cover art (drawn by a pre-fame Andy Warhol).

     Jelly Roll Morton recorded voluminously for RCA, and this five-CD set includes many of the masterpieces of New Orleans jazz, the bulk of them recorded between 1926 and 1930, when Morton's art was at its peak. First recording in Chicago and later in New York, the great composer evolved his style within its own terms, gradually moving from fairly tight arrangements of his compositions to a more expansive approach that increasingly exploited the special talents of his players. Whether playing with musicians whose names are obscure today, or with some of the most famous names from the early history of jazz, like Red Allen, Bubber Miley, Zutty Singleton, and Baby Dodds, Morton created music of relaxed verve, often favoring medium tempos that highlighted his keen sense of detail. In addition to all the great band tracks, there are superb trios featuring the clarinets of Omer Simeon and Johnny Dodds, as well as fine solo piano pieces.       One of the finest European jazz pianists of all time, Martial Solal (a unique stylist) has never received as much recognition in the U.S. as he deserves. Born in Algiers to French parents, Solal has been based in Paris since the late '40s. Grab This! finds tenor Johnny Griffin in a soul-jazz mood, which is greatly aided by the organ of Paul Bryant. They are joined by guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Jimmy Bond, and drummer Doug Sides for nice workouts on several originals and a couple of standards. The band seems confident and relaxed throughout this recording, injecting everything it touches with a healthy dose of the blues. Griffin's tone is rich and full throughout, but is most striking on Ellington and Russell's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and the self-penned original "Grab This!" Bryant has been given special guest status, and his style is perfectly matched with Griffin's...

     Моё мнение, этот концертник должен обязательно быть на полке у любого, кто любит Брубека. Что-то невообразимое творилось той ночью 1970 года в Берлине. Вместо положенного эта четвёрка сыграла вполовину больше - публика их просто не отпускала. И это в то время, когда на дворе царствовал рок-н-ролл... Одним словом, очень рекомендую! Особенно пьесу Blessed Are the Poor, которая лично для меня доносится прямо из космоса.
