     When I think of great alto saxophonists, I think of performers like Paul Desmond, Eric Dolphy or Sonny Criss. This 1968 Prestige Records release was remastered at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley California by Kirk Felton in 2000, the sound quality easy on the ears and crystal clear. The rhythm section of Bob Cranshaw (bass), Cedar Walton (piano) and Alan Dawson (drums) does a wonderful job backing "West Coast" Sonny. Criss particularly stands out due to his blues-laced horn and interesting phrasings, with Cedar Walton standing out amongst the sidemen most on these tracks. On "Calidad" Walton breaks off into a romping solo sure to get you toe-tapping in no time, and "Yesterdays" takes a moment to show-off Criss's dexterous abilities and once again showcases some wonderful piano work from Walton. All around this is a great album to own and belongs in jazz collections everywhere. -- Amazon.com reviewer

     Although altoist Jackie McLean's Prestige recordings of the 1950s are not as significant as his Blue Notes from the '60s, he did record quite a bit of enjoyable hard bop material during this era. This CD is unusual for, in addition to a conventional quintet (with trumpeter Bill Hardman, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor), the young tuba player Ray Draper is heard on three of the five group originals. Draper played his instrument as part of the frontline rather than in the rhythm section and, even if he was not on the level of McLean and Hardman, he gives some needed color to this set. Waldron, who contributed two of the five selections (the others are by McLean, Watkins or Draper) really sets the melancholy mood for much of the music and is an important force behind the scenes.      Clifford Jordan's first date as a leader actually found him sharing a heated jam session with fellow tenor John Gilmore. Backed by pianist Horace Silver, bassist Curly Russell, and drummer Art Blakey, the two saxophonists square off mostly on obscurities (other than Gigi Gryce's "Blue Lights" and "Billie's Bounce"); the original six selections are joined by the previously unreleased "Let It Stand" on the CD reissue. This was one of Gilmore's few sessions outside of Sun Ra's orbit and, if anything, he slightly overshadows the cooler-toned Jordan. Recommended. -- AMG
