Ray Brown Trio - Live At Scullers (1997) |

Artist: Ray Brown Album: Live At Scullers Release 1997 Label: Telarc 1997 Format, bitrate: MP3 320 kbps Time: 56:18 Size: 131 mb (shareonall) Staying young by working with the young, Ray Brown and cohorts Benny Green (piano) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums) laid down a set of jazz and pop standards at a club in a Boston Double Tree Hotel. Though Brown is the leader and anchor of the date, quite obviously the pianist is going to dominate the act -- and Green definitely puts on a show, wiping everyone out with the pyrotechnics of "You're My Everything," engaging in a gentle stride opening to "But Not for Me," and coming logically to a bombastic climax. Hutchinson is capable, swinging, and occasionally volatile, and Brown mostly steps back and gives these guys a firm underpinning, with a sly solo now and then ("Bye, Bye Blackbird.") There are few surprises or deviations from the mainstream here, but a good time will be had by anyone who gives this a spin. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide |

Robert Cray Band - Live From Across the Pond (2006) |

Artist: Robert Cray Band Album: Live From Across The Pond Label: Vanguard Records Year: 2006 Genre: Blues Tracks: 7 + 7 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 Size: 49 MB + 51 MB + 49 MB + 51 MB Robert Cray has been quietly turning out consistently solid blues efforts since 1980, and 2006's two-CD set LIVE FROM ACROSS THE POND shows that Cray's brand of smooth, accessible blues has only improved over the years. Cray has a soft spot for the sound of 1960s R&B, a fondness reflected brilliantly in his sharp, tuneful songwriting and deeply soulful singing. Many of these songs wouldn't sound out of place on a Stax/Volt platter circa 1968, but Cray's flawless guitar technique keeps things rooted in the tradition of electric blues. Packed with great tunes and solos, LIVE should please fans of Cray and electric blues in general. |

The Ray Draper Quintet featuring John Coltrane (1957) |

Artists: Ray Draper and John Coltrane Album: The Ray Draper Quintet Year: 1957 Label: Prestige Format: MP3 @320kbps Size: 86 mb (RS.com, w/ 5% file recovery) Includes Covers + Liner Notes What makes this fairly typical bop outing unique is that the leader plays tuba. Ray Draper (1940-82) was only 17 when he recorded this quintet date in 1957, his third of three for Prestige, and, as much as possible, he makes the clunky instrument swing. As Ira Gitler's interesting notes point out, the tuba was a pretty common rhythm instrument in the early days of jazz. Then the string bass came along and took its place. Draper, who was featured with Jackie McLean, Max Roach and later, Jack McDuff and Archie Shepp, was determined to see the tuba become a featured jazz instrument. Somewhat predictably, it never happened. Even though Draper's career fizzled after only a few more records, this one is probably the best thing he did on his own. He's aided in no small measure by John Coltrane, whose keen, sensitive partnership on five of these six tunes make for worthwhile, perhaps essential, listening. Coltrane is simply magnificent – in a much more restrained role here than in his explorations elsewhere at this time. |

Mal Waldron - Left Alone (1959) |

Artist: Mal Waldron Album: Left Alone Year: 1959 Label: Bethlehem Time: 38:11 Format: MP3 @320kbps Size: 86 mb (RS.com, w/ 5% file recovery) Includes Covers + Scans This obscure CD reissue has the wrong date listed (it is from February 24, 1959, not November 1957) and fails to mention that altoist Jackie McLean sits in with pianist Mal Waldron's trio (which includes bassist Julian Euell and drummer Al Dreares) on the title cut, a number co-written by Waldron and Billie Holiday. Although Waldron dedicated the album to Lady Day and talks about her a bit on the last track in a short interview with vibraphonist Teddy Charles (which was recorded a bit later), he actually only performs one song from her repertoire: "You Don't Know What Love Is." Otherwise this rather brief CD has the title cut, two other typically brooding Waldron originals plus Sonny Rollins' "Airegin." McLean's emotional alto is such a strong asset on the title cut that one wishes he were on the rest of this worthwhile set. |

David Gilmour - Remenber that night 2007 |

Artist - David Gilmour Album - Remenber that night Year - 2007 Format: AVI Size : 3.20 GB / 720-404 / Mp3 128 kbps # DVD Release Date: September 18, 2007 # Run Time: 313 minutes Pink Floyd always sparks some magic and psychedelia laced elements in their sounds. What I have always considered two masterpiece albums were represented in this DVD. "Atom Heart Mother" and "Meddle" are two pivotal achievements in Floyds career. So in this DVD, when I heard "Fat Old Sun" done traditionally with Rick Wright's organ accompaniment, and "Echoes" treated with the same reverence, I was enthralled. And lets not forget the great Phil Manzanera, (of Roxy Music fame) on guitar, who in my estimation wasn't given enough spotlight. Robert Wyatt needed more time and substantive material as well. David Gilmour's guitar was, of course scorching. It would of been a real treat to see one of his lesser known works, like "The Narrow Way" from Umma Gumma. Oh well. The light show was awesome. Even the odd inclusion of David Crosby and Grahm Nash worked in its strange way. All in all, one of the best concert DVDs I have ever witnessed. |

A few years back I saw a concert that was similar to this: "Friday Night In San Francisco" It was amazing live. This DVD brought back memories of the show and CD I bought. Of course this was a different line up, I saw Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughin oh and a little known axe player at the time Steve Morse I guess it was more than a few years ago. Anyway I digress back to this lineup, great sound, all acoustic mic,and furiously fast. This frentic trio had me hypnotized from the opening salvo of guitar splendor. This lineup included Al Di Meola, Larry Coryell, and Bireli Lagrene. If you love Guitar fireworks at blazing speed, but always in key and in time you will love this accoustic masterpiece. They cover Coryell, Return to Forever, Chick Corea, and Astor Piazzolla tunes and a few Di Meola classics. Its short, sweet, blazing, hypnotic and totally worth the price. If you have any interest in classical guitar, or acoustic speedstering this the DVD for you. I wish more stuff like this were available. --By GLENN LEVY "DVD collector" (Chicago) |

1964: Cannonball Adderley - Live! |
Hard-bop, Adderley Cannonball |
 |
 |
Artist: Cannonball Adderley Album: Cannonball Adderley - Live! Label: Capitol Release Date: 1964 Format: MP3@256 kbit/s Size: 84.5 MB Time: 46:20 When Riverside Records went into bankruptcy, Adderley signed with Capitol, a label whose interest in jazz was tended to be short-lived. As a result, Cannonball's recordings would become more commercial as the 1960s developed but this early Capitol effort is quite good. Charles Lloyd had just joined Adderley's Sextet and his tenor and flute were major assets; he contributed two of the four songs ("Sweet Georgia Bright" and "The Song My Lady Sings") to this fine session which also includes Nat Adderley's "Little Boy with the Sad Eyes" and yet another version of "Work Song." -- Review by Scott Yanow, AMG. |
