Dexter Gordon - Daddy Plays The Horn (1958) Music » Jazz » BeBop » Hard-bop
Dexter Gordon - Daddy Plays The Horn (1958) Artist: Dexter Gordon
Album: Daddy Plays The Horn
Year: 1958 (re-issue 2000)
Label: Bethlehem Archives/Avenue Jazz/Shout Factory
Time: 41:39
Format: MP3 @320kbps
Size: 124mb (RS.com, includes cover)
AMG: 4 stars

Shout Factory brings back to light one of only three sessions recorded in the '50s by bop tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, Daddy Plays the Horn, originally issued on the Bethlehem label. The '50s were a difficult time for Gordon, as he spent the majority of the decade hooked on narcotics and doing jail time because of it. He didn't make a comeback until 1960, when he began recording for Blue Note. Daddy Plays the Horn was recorded five years previously in September 1955, with Gordon rounding out his quartet with pianist Kenny Drew, drummer Larance Marable, and bassist Leroy Vinnegar. The bandmembers mesh well on the uptempo tunes "You Can Depend on Me," Charlie Parker's bop classic "Confirmation," and two Gordon originals, "Number Four" and "Daddy Plays the Horn," but it's the heartfelt ballads "Darn That Dream" and "Autumn in New York" that really make this album noteworthy. Although Daddy Plays the Horn is not in the same league as his comeback releases, Gordon's tenor playing on these sessions appears effortless, even though the man was in dire straits. - AMG

Eric Dolphy - Berlin Concerts (1961)
Artist: Eric Dolphy
Album: Berlin Concerts
Year: 1961
Label: Enja
Time: 71: 42
Format: MP3 @ 192kbps
Size: 60mb + 41mb (RS.com)
AMG: 4 stars

This two-LP set features the great multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy mostly stretching out on standards, coming up with very original statements on such songs as "Hot House," "When Lights Are Low," "Hi Fly," "I'll Remember April" and "God Bless the Child" (the latter taken as an unaccompanied bass clarinet solo), in addition to two brief originals. With trumpeter Benny Bailey helping out on half of the selections along with a strong rhythm section, the two-fer would be a perfect introduction for listeners not familiar with Eric Dolphy's innovative style, but this set is very difficult to find. - AMG

1985: Chet Baker - Chet Baker In Bologna
Artist: Chet Baker
Album: Chet Baker In Bologna
Year: 1985, release 1992
Label: Dreyfus
Format: MP3@192 kbps
Size: 87 mb (RS.com)

The perfect setting for Chet Baker in his latest years was in a quiet trio with guitar and bass. This 1992 CD brought out a previously unreleased, but well-recorded live set in which Baker is joined by guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. Although there are a couple of typically indifferent vocals by Baker, his trumpet playing is in fine form throughout the date, which includes George Shearing's "Conception," "Tune Up" and the umpteenth remake of "My Funny Valentine." -- Allmusic.com

1960: Cannonball Adderley - Them Dirty BluesArtist: Cannonball Adderley
Album: Them Dirty Blues
Audio CD (Feb 1, 1960, Mar 29, 1960)
Label: Capitol Jazz
Original Release Date: 2000
Quality: MP3, 320 kb/s
Size: 116 mb

Recorded in early 1960, Them Dirty Blues contains two classic jazz compositions: Nat Adderley's "Work Song" and Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere," the sequel to "This Here." This was alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley's second quintet with brother Nat Adderley (cornet), and features Bobby Timmons on piano (who plays on four tracks and was replaced by Barry Harris on the remaining five), Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Them Dirty Blues was originally released on Riverside until Adderley made the switch to Capitol where he brought several master tapes with him, including these sessions. The CD reissue contains an alternate version each of "Work Song" and "Dat Dere." -- Review by Al Campbell, AMG.
